The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources
The world relies on a variety of energy sources. Fossil fuels–including natural gas, petroleum and coal–accounted for more than 80 percent of the energy consumed in 2018. Renewables, like solar power, wind power hydroelectricity and biomass, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy accounts for another 5%. Different countries use different energy sources to balance the needs of their economy and environmental concerns.
Nature provides energy in a number of forms, including sunlight as well as wind, waves ocean and more. These sources of energy can be transformed into more practical energy forms, such as electricity or heat, once they are harnessed. These sources are non-renewable resources of energy once they have been exhausted.
Many fossil fuels, as well as some of the other energy sources that are not renewable are causing harm to the environment. Mining oil, for instance can cause the destruction of our forests that are virgin to the earth. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) can trigger earthquakes and water pollution. The burning of coal releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.
Fortunately, many of the most promising sources of energy are sustainable and renewable. Wind, solar and hydropower for instance, can generate electricity without the need to search for new resources.
Other sustainable energy sources are gaining momentum, such as the wave and tidal power. To be utilized on an enormous scale, these technologies require effective distribution networks. They need to be constructed using a source of non-renewable energy sources. Therefore, these sources aren’t enough to supply the majority of our energy requirements. It is important to keep in mind that the costs for renewable energy equipment have come down significantly in the past few years, and the efficiency is growing rapidly.
